What is the absolute best solution for washing a dog sprayed by a skunk?

Yesterday, my chocolate lab got sprayed in the face, neck and upper body by a skunk. Wow! I always heard of tomato juice, but that it takes a lot of it. I was told by the neighbor to buy skunk wash from the pet store. I bought something from Simple Solutions called Skunk Odor Eliminator. I followed the directions to a tee, used the whole bottle, but there is still a very strong odor. It also isn't helping that is is rainy out today, because that seems to bring the odor back out. What is the absolute best solution for washing a dog sprayed by a skunk?
Rain will bring the odor back out...even with the most effective solutions. Tomato juice doesn't work...it MAY cover it up, but that's it. Look for a product called skunk off. That works pretty well...many vets carry it (no appointment needed to get it...they just sell it to you). Otherwise, the following at-home solution works very well (but you can only mix it when you plan to use it)...Take 1 quart of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide (available from any drugstore), 1/4 cup of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate for you science types) and 1 teaspoon of liquid soap, such as Ivory. Mix and immediately apply to the stinky pet. Rinse thoroughly with tap water. What is the absolute best solution for washing a dog sprayed by a skunk?
I've heard tomator juice works. Hope you have a small dog!
pee on it, have a group of people pee on it at the same time in different areas.
Tomato juice is the only tried and true remedy I've heard of. Something to do with a two-pronged approach - acid-based tomato juice physically breaks down oil-based skunk spray, but also something else in tomato juice actually breaks down the actual scent molecule.
Lemon juice! The oil from the skunk spray is dissolved by the acid. Just sponge it on and wash it off. Be careful of the poor dogs eyes. Maybe put lots of vasoline areound the to prevent run-off.
Blondie is right you need to use tomato sauce
Vinegar and tomato juice. My future inlaws jack russel gets into everything which includes getting sprayed by skunks just about monthly!

Good luck!!!
vinegar and/or tomato sauce has to work. If not, either go to the vet or wait for the smell to wear off.....
Use vinegar to get that odor off your pet. Yipes!
Unfortunately, only time gets rid of the smell totally. Liberal amounts of tomato juice or vinegar are able to neutralize some of the smell and make it more tolerable. Vinegar is best on white dogs unless you don't mind a pink dog - the tomato juice does turn white dogs pink for awhile. We've had many a dog sprayed by skunks. In addition, we had a mama skunk and her babies live under our porch for awhile. We called the Conservation Officer and he came and trapped them. However, whenever it was damp, our house smelled like skunk for about 5 years after they were gone. Eau de Skunk is definitely one of Mother Nature's strongest odors.
I've tried tomato juice and it's not as effective as I would have liked, and both the tomato juice and pet store odor removers are expensive if you have more than one dog that gets sprayed.

My dog trainer uses an inexpensive ladies' douche, but it takes quite a lot if you have a large dog, and I've found that peroxide is relatively inexpensive; generally around $1.00 per quart - I always keep a couple of quarts in my barn just in case I have the need.

I've tried the first recipe below and it works well. I've included a couple of others too which I haven't tried but are similar. This year seems to be worse than most for skunks - we live on a ranch and I've seen 'way more skunks this year than before. Both of our dogs have ';gotten skunked'; one twice. Be sure the dog has its' rabies shots as skunks can carry the disease - that in my opinion is worse than the skunk smell.

Be sure to keep this out of your dog's eyes...

Recipe #1:

1 quart 3% Hydrogen Peroxide

1/4 cup Baking Soda

1 teaspoon liquid soap

Mix in a bucket (it will fizz).

Soak your dog's fur, but be careful not to get any in his eyes. Use a sponge to clean off his head and around his eyes. Knead solution into the fur and be sure to get every part of him with it. Rinse thoroughly

Recipe #2:

1 cup of vinegar

1 cup hydrogen peroxide

1 cup of dish soap

Lather WELL, add water until a good thick coat of lather is worked up and let sit for 10 minutes. Rinse well, followed by 1/2 cup of vinegar in 1 gallon of water to rinse and leave on.

Recipe #3:

1 pint hydrogen peroxide

2/3 cup baking soda

1 tablespoon of citrus-based liquid soap
There is no single solution that will completely fix it. I've had the best results with the following progression:

Deskunk shampoo (follow directions)

Tomato paste left on affected areas for 10-20 min then rinse

Vinegar left on for 10 minutes

Then wash with regular shampoo

Sounds like a lot of work, and won't completely get rid of it, but it gets most of it...
TOMATO SAUCE...NOT JUICE
two bottles of hydrogen peroxide

1/2 cup baking soda

1 squirt of liquid dish soap

Mix in bucket sponge on dog let sit 10-15 mintues

rinse well.

This works better than anything else I have tried including hte Skunk Off stuff

My dogs get skunked about ever couple of months.

This works pretty well but there will be some lingering smell if it is bad repeat the treatment in a day or so.

I had my doberman take a full shot in the face chest and neck. It was bad but this worked pretty well at least he could be back in the house.
Believe it or not, but the BEST way to clean your dog after it's been sprayed by a skunk is to use douche!

I heard this directly from my Vet.

I'm a woman too, so ladies please don't take offense to this. I was shocked at first myself. Unfortunately I learned a couple of weeks later when my dog was sprayed and you know what - it worked.

Have a lovely rest of the day.
definitely tomato jiuice
I have heard that rubbing prepared mustard into their coat and letting it sit for a while then washing it out works, but I am not sure how you will keep your dog from turning your house yellow or how to keep him/her from licking it of or getting it in it's eyes. But it should work, if not than your poor pooch is gonna smell like a rotten hot dog. Hope that helps and good luck.
Keep the dog outside until it stops stinking. That's about the only thing we could ever do.
a lot of tomato juice
tomato sauce works best but is more costly than juice. Mix the tomato juice with some water and try to soak them for a bit.
This solution was demonstrated on ';The Mythbusters';. They allowed themselves to be sprayed by a skunk, [brave men] and this mixture de-skunked both them and the washroom. In a clean bucket mix together: 3 cups hydrogen peroxide {cheap %26amp; available at any drug store}, 3/4 cup baking soda, 2 tablespoons dishwashing liquid, and a few cups warm water. Scrub and suds up your dog, let the solution sit for 10 minutes. Don't let her lick herself and be gentle around her eyes. Rinse her with clean water very well. For her breath, brush her teeth with a little bit of homemade baking soda paste. The solution may be used to clean any skunky smells around your home as well. This should help your poor dog.
Tomato juice acids break down the chemical bond of the skunk oils that attaches to the skin and hair.

Will taking beer out of your refrigerator skunk it?

I came to visit some friends and bought a whole bunch of beer. When it was time for me to leave I wanted to take the beer with me. All my friends said that if I take it home it would skunk the beer, and totally ruin it. I live about eight hours away. I have never heard of this, but they could be right I guess. Will taking beer out of your refrigerator skunk it?
    NO!

Here's the deal on skunked beer from an article I wrote...

';First and foremost, beer does not go “skunky” by temperature change. It’s time we busted the myth of beer spoiling by going from warm to cold to warm again. I’ve talked to literally hundreds of people in retail stores who told me they didn’t want to buy their beer cold because they had a long drive home, or didn’t have room in their refrigerator to keep it. This usually led them to purchase some kind of boring, grocery-store beer from a big, multinational brewing conglomerate. If I was successful in my argument, they put down the bland alcohol-water and bought some good craft beer from the cooler, because what I told them made perfect sense: the only way a beer is going to spoil by temperature change is by EXTREME temperature changes.

I told these knowledge-thirsty beer consumers that if they were planning on freezing their beer, then putting it on the stove, then dropping it in liquid nitrogen, then laying it out on an asphalt basketball court at High Noon on the equator, then the beer would most certainly spoil. Temperature changes of a few dozen degrees would have no noticeable effect on the liquid, as long as it was consumed in a reasonable matter of time. Obviously, this was a very extreme example to hit my point home, but the point was hit, regardless.

Time and time again, the term they loved to throw around was “skunky.” Temperature shock will not “skunk” your beer. Extreme temperature changes will really screw with the perfect chemical balance of a bottle of good beer, or crappy beer too, for that matter. The most common problem with these beers is oxidation, which is evident by a papery, wet cardboard flavor/aroma. Chew on a piece of looseleaf paper like you’re hiding Government Secrets, then you’ll see what I mean.

That “skunky” beer in your hand is actually lightstruck.

Lightstruck is exactly what it sounds like: the beer was damaged by light, particularly sunlight, or fluorescent lighting like that of liquor stores and beer warehouses. When UV rays penetrate (insert laugh here) the glass of a beer bottle, they manipulate the chemical makeup of iso-alpha acids produced by the hops, our delicious floral friends that give beer its bitterness. The result of this unwelcome penetration and manipulation is the creation of a new compound called methyl mercaptan, one of the many components found in the defense mechanism of: you guessed it, the skunk. Kinda makes sense now, as to why it’s referred to as “skunky.”

Most beer doesn’t have this flavor or smell because most beer is packaged in brown glass bottles, which are over 98% resistant to UV rays. Guess which color glass lets that light in. Time’s up: green and clear bottles. This is the reason certain beers from South of the Border are served with a lime wedge; it’s more than vacation in a bottle, it’s a cover-up method. If your garbage disposal stinks, you may pour some citrus-scented dishsoap down there. The stench doesn’t go away, but the wife and kids won’t notice it right away.

This is where some people are going to get really defensive. Those green glass bottles from Europe that contain the really fancy and expensive beer… you know, the ones you bought in college when you wanted to show some girl you really had class? That interesting aroma and flavor is not a unique trademark of that brand, or any of those brands that package that way. It’s an indication that beer has been spoiled as a result of UV light. I’m not saying it’s bad. You may like it. You may be drinking one now, but you deserve to know the truth. Don’t believe me? Try it in cans or on tap; totally different brew!

You know the real ***** of the matter? It doesn’t take long for light to damage beer. On the off chance that beer in green or clear bottles is not already damaged when you leave the store, less than one minute in the sun will spoil it. That’s roughly the time it takes to walk to your car with your new investment. The only real way to avoid this problem is to Drink Better Beer. Buy beer in brown glass bottles that has been kept away from light as much as possible. Beer is liquid bread; and like its non-liquid counterpart, it can go bad. The one true saving grace is this: there are no harmful bacteria on earth that can live in alcohol. That being said, your green-glass grocery-store special may taste like the business end of a skunk, but it won’t kill you.';Will taking beer out of your refrigerator skunk it?
Wow, this is an interesting explanation. I always thought Heineken and Corona tasted bad, this could be why.

If you keep it in a cooler, it won't skunk. Once to chill beer, and it warms up, it skunks...not as much in light beer, though the darker beers I found skunk fast...
Nope it won't. Beer is coole and warmed a lot before you even buy it from the store.Sounds like your friends are thirsty and want to drink it!
hmmm im sorry but i think you just got scammed. They just wanted your beer. i dont think you can ';skunk'; a beer at least ive never heard of that term?
A beer has a skunk taste because it was exposed to light or sun.

Note that beer sold in clear or green glass bottle have a tendency to have a skunk taste.

I now by Heineken in cans. It always taste good.

You can take the beer in and out of the fridge. It will not hurt the taste.

However, if the beer freezes, it looses the original taste and most of the time, the beer becomes flat.
    I don't understand 'skunk'
It takes quite a bit of heating or exposure to light to skunk beer. If you had the beer in your car and parked it in the sun for the eight hours, it might taste skunky. Then you'd have to pass it off as Corona and kill the taste with a wedge of lime. With friends like those ....
Yes, if it's cold then warm again, it won't taste the same.
No, they wanted to keep it for themselves. The longer beer stays in cold, the better, but even a whole day at room temperature and back to cold won't skunk your beer. Beer is held at room temp oon the beer trucks for several days at a time. Ask them about that when you have a chance. If beer is kept unrefrigerated for a long time, then it can turn skunky...usually after several weeks.
It will. Beer is often sold warm but is fine when chilled. If it is chilled then allowed to warm, then chilled again and so on, i twill degrade the taste. Skunked beer does have a reputation for being more potent, just not as good.

Of course, they may have said that so you would leave all the beer. LOL.
Yes it can, once beer has been cooled for the first time the yeast will die and start producting a bad flavor in the beer, as long as the beer stays cold it isnt noticable but once it is warmed it is very distinctive. The beer is warmed once in the brewing process and thats before the yeast is added, and after that point it is at a controlled temperature around 60-70 deg. till it's bottled. Yeast needs to be somewhere between 50-75 degrees to stay alive and not affect the beer. After bottling some beer is then chilled and some is kept at room temperarure wich you would see in the stores out in the open

What is the best way to get skunk smell off of my dog?

Ok so my genius dog got herself sprayed by a skunk last night and I need to know how I get get her to smell somewhat tolerable and fast. What is the best way to get skunk smell off of my dog?
Bathe her in tomato juice. What is the best way to get skunk smell off of my dog?
run a small bathtub of warm water

go buy a tube of white tooth paste and some conditioner

now squirt toothpast in hand on a little water form it into paste

now rub it all over the dog and be sure that it makes contact with the skin too, DO NOT GET IN DOGS EYES, no finsh by giving him a bath with conditioner

what this does is the toothpaste removes the oils and the conditioner replaces them

used to live out in the country and my dogs get hit all the time

i have done this method and it has worked everytime
Try using lemon juice, the acid will cut the oily chemical sprayed from the skunk.
I can tell you honestly that tomato juice will not get rid of the smell entirely. In fact, not much will, because the oils from the skunk spray combines with the dogs natural body oils and absorbs into the skin.

Paw Brothers sells a combination system, a de-skunk shampoo and spray. The spray neutralizes the odor, and the shampoo, which you have to use twice, cleans the oil from the dog. Then you spray the dog again. Most dogs get sprayed right in the face, which is especially difficult to get clean. In any event, the Paw Brothers' system works well enough, but won't get rid of the smell completely.

You can try mouthwash, it will sometimes take away some of the odor causing bacteria. But unfortunately, it mostly a waiting game. You can get rid of some of the smell, but very rarely rid the animal of it completely in one shot.
Use Vinegar in a good dog shampoo, wash her twice, and make sure you keep it away from her eyes. If you are worried that it will get in her eyes, get some mineral oil, and put a drop in each eye, this will prevent any irritation.
Lots of tomato soup and soap. Or tomato sauce, paste etc and soap. Scrub really well. Good luck!!
TOMATO JUICE DOES NOT WORK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am a groomer for 17 yrs and I have answered skunking ?'s every day for a month including about an hour ago. Go look up other ?'s as I don't feel like repeating the formula again. Im sure you weren't logged on and just missed it, I don't mean to sound crappy. But trust me here, tomato juice will HELP, but it won't work.
If you have a local Pet-co or Pet-smart nearby , there is a specific product made to bath your dog if this happens. Skunk-off I believe is the name. Try this before the Tomato juice thing. Good luck.
what you need to do is take you dog a tomato juice bath make sure she stays in for about 20 minuets and then take your dog a bath with shampoo for dogs and if your dog has a long coat then use conditioner and make sure your dog stays away from skunks
    .yep. tomatoe juice.
    Tomato juice

Stop storing skunks in your shed. Baking soda or a product that you get from the pet store called Odor mute or similar pet odor remover. Probably lots of it depending on the size of the shed. Sprinkle baking soda on the floor of the shed. How do you get rid of a skunk like odor in a shed?
Our dog got a hold of a skunk one time and smelled to high heaven. We lathered her up with tomato sauce, paste, soup anything else tomato, that we could find... She smelled fine after that. The acid in the tomato absorbed the chemical in the spray to neutralize the odor. I was walking the dog after that, as always, we stayed away from that bush in the cemetery.
bleach with water, spray down and then rinse. you can also try lemon, baking soda, or all that mixed together.

    Good luck!

Is it legal to own a pet skunk in New York?

I live in Suffolk County, NY.

I've done kind of a lot of research on the matter, but have still not found a definitive answer. Some sites say it's legal, some say I'd need a permit, some say it's illegal.

Is there anywhere that maintains an up-to-date list of legal states?
