Yes, I used to be allergic before I had allergy desensitation shots. For me, it was like a mixture of skunk smell and pepper spray. It burned and made me lose my voice. It also made me break out in hives. Is it possible to be allergic to skunk smell?
Well, surely an allergy is defined as the body's irrational defense of itself in the presence of something relatively harmless (the allergen). So, is it possible? Yes.

A skunk , and I have seen it, has made it's home under the concrete front step of my home. The house is 8 years old and has poured conctrete basement walls. The step that it's under is surrounded below on 3 sides by concrete walls and all but 18'; of the front is the concrete walk way. There is just a small area of dirt on each side of the step and that is where the skunk has burrowed below the step. Can I do anything myself? How do I get rid of a skunk?

Good old fashion moth balls. The smelly kind, not the newer 'no scent' ones. They hate the smell and will relocate their home somewhere else. Just toss a handfull of them into and around the area that they are making their home, and they will leave. they should be gone by the next day. They are nocturnal for the most part and sleep during the day unless disturbed. Leave the moth balls inside the hole after they leave to prevent them from returning.
i trap them . it is about the only way.

  • How do I get rid of a skunk that is under my deck?

My dog went nuts this morning and ran to the deck barking and spinning and pawing at the deck, then he jumped back. After that we smelled a faint skunk odor, luckily the dog did not get sprayed but we want the skunk gone without killing it or ripping up the deck. How do I get rid of a skunk that is under my deck?
No, you do NOT feed a skunk or any other wild animal, for that matter. Teaching a wild animal to associate food with humans will cause them to instinctively lose their fear of people, which is a critical survival skill. Even though you want to be kind to them, it is very cruel to drive that necessary fear out of them. The next person they come into contact with may not be so happy to see them, and the animal will end up being killed.

Neighbors of mine had a raccoon ';begging'; for food at their kitchen door in the middle of the day. It had obviously been someones pet at some point, but the neighbor was very frightened (particularly that the animal might be carrying rabies) and had it killed. Feeding wildlife does not do the animal any favors!

That being said, skunks are primarily nocturnal, so to avoid being sprayed, do your ';eviction'; at night. Soak a few old rags or towels in ammonia and place them under the deck. Skunks do not like the smell of it and will not house themselves there.

Skunks are usually in pairs or family units, so you may be getting rid of more than one. If they have a litter under there, they should all be old enough to be mobile this time of year.

Once the animal is gone, you will need to use lattice board or some other building material to close up openings under the deck, or you will encounter the same problem again and again. Close up the spacing under the deck to prevent more skunks from moving back in.How do I get rid of a skunk that is under my deck?
Oh we've had that happen quite a few times. I live in south Texas and skunks like to occasionally make homes beneath our decks, etc. A cheap way to get rid of them is to put moth balls under the deck, house, whatever. Yes, moth balls smell funny, and that is why the skunk will run away. Contrary to popular belief, a skunk does not like a bad smell.

Its a fairly cheap solution to a problem that could end up costing you quite a lot of money. I DO NOT suggest feeding it. It is essentially the same as feeding raccoons. If you start feeding one, then others come around, and pretty soon, you will have dozens to deal with.
You could buy some of the animal repellent and toss it under the deck. It smells bad and animals don't like it and will leave. Cats and dogs don't like the smell of it so may be a skunk will not like it either. You could call animal control for some ideas also. Wish you luck on not getting sprayed.
i just feed them, my cats and dog got used to them and the skunks became so used to my animals that they felt comfortible to the point where you could pet them. They are of the same family as the ferret (weasel). I had 14 skunks, 1 dog, 4 cats, and a racoon that all got along.
maybe you spray the skunk with some kind of repellent,or water(hose)

other option is calling pest control and paying money to trap the skunk.can you see the animal is still there, or gone.

get some bear spray, try it, spray under the deck.
Skunks can't stand stuff that smells worse (in their opinion) then they do. So place a shallow bowl of ammonia carefully (you don't want to get sprayed) under your deck and in a few hours your smelly visitor should be gone.
they are nocturnal and wait for them to go out on their nightly routine and board up where they are getting in.

Just make sure there are no babies under the porch when you board it up

    I wish you luck
try to give the skunk food bye putting it outside or you can try to scared it

You could call animal control, or someplace that deals with wildlife. Tell them that you don't want it harmed, more often than not they can use live traps. If animal control says they can't capture it without killing it, try getting hold of your local park or nature preserve. They should be able to help. How do you get ride of a skunk?

Why can I not have a pet skunk in Illinois?

There are effective rabies vacines, but why are they not USDA approved? These are such wonderful animals, why do people hate them so much? Why can I not have a pet skunk in Illinois?
Testing on skunks hasn't been done, so even if the skunk receives the dog or cat vaccine for rabies, there's no studies that can be used to point to in case your skunk bites someone and they insist it be killed to test for rabies (ferrets had the same problem for the longest time till enough research was done).

You can get them vaccinated, but it won't stop anything in the eyes of the law.

Yes, they're great animals--but they're wildlife even if domestically bred and raised, and often a permit is required because of that. Why can I not have a pet skunk in Illinois?
It's not because people hate them... but it is illegal in illinois... and in the states it is legal in there are many restrictions... these animals were made with smell sacks and sharp teeth for a reason so they can live in the wild and protect themselves...
A number of states have laws banning the private ownership of native species, even if they were purchased from a USDA licensed breeder, and not caught in the wild. It is not because people hate the animals, it is to protect the native wildlife.
