How to Remove a Skunk Smell

Skunk smells can be very pungent and long lasting if not removed completely and as quickly as possible. Due to the chemical nature of the skunk odor there are certain processes that should be used to eliminate a skunk smell from a pet, a person, or a home. Read on to learn how to remove a skunk smell.

Skunk Odor

Step 1

Separate the odor affected item from your home. If a pet has a skunk smell move the pet outside, if a piece of furniture has been sprayed move it outdoors, and if a room in your house has been sprayed then close all interior doors and open exterior windows.

Step 2

Wash the skunk smelling item. Use a warm water, soap based baking soda mixture to clean the pet or person. Completely wet the subject, scrub gently and rinse with clean warm water. Repeat the wash if necessary for high skunk odors.

Step 3

Dry and air the skunk odor affected item. Place any physical item out of your house and allow it to air dry for at least three hours after you have washed the item. For interior smells leave the windows open overnight with a fan to circulate and remove the skunk odor.
Not much you can but open up the windows and air the house out and wash down everything with solutions of hydrogen peroxide and white vinegar until the smell eventually goes away.
