There are articles in books in ref to what you wanting to know you just need to research what you are looking for and that means to read more books on dogs
Tomato juice : )

only thing I know that works
Tomato Juice with some vinegar...it neutrilizes the odors. you may have to repeat this but it does work. Had to do it to 2 dobermans..took 3 washes but it worked... Good Luck...
All tomato juice is going to do is give you a red dog. It doesnt help.

Recipe for skunk odor...

Mix..

1 cup water

1/2 cup baking soda

1 tablespoon Dawn dishsoap

When ready to use, add 1 quart peroxide

Work solution into dogs coat and rinse really good. Dont get it in dogs eyes. Toss anything left over....you cannot reuse it.

I will tell you this...no matter what you use, your dog will still have a faint skunky odor when it gets wet for a long time. I have had dogs come in for a bath that were sprayed a year ago, and I can still smell a faint skunk odor.
The best and most effective method is tomato juice. Coat the dog thoroughly and scrub well. Leave it on for a while too. You need to give it time to work. At least 15 minutes is best. The dog will still have a slight stink. It takes a while and a FEW baths to get the scent out completely.
Rule number 1: DO NOT PUT YOUR DOG IN YOUR CAR; I did that once, and once only! Phew!

There are 2 things to do: 1: buy a huge can of tomato juice and massage it into your dog's skin and fur. Leave it on for 20 + minutes, or so (while you rush to the pet store for shampoo?).

2: Rinse it off, and then shampoo him/her with a special skunk odor removal shampoo. I've found ';Spectrum' to be the most effective. Follow the directions, but do the process twice.

Be warned, while you can get rid of most of the odor, some will linger for a few weeks.
Mud bath
My grandpa told me that when he was a kid they would use tomato juice. Don't know why that would work other than maybe the acidity in the tomatoes. Grandpa had some hunting dogs that got sprayed when he was 12.
Go with the water, baking soda, soap and peroxide that was mentioned above, it works so much better then tomato juice. I let it sit on the animals for a good ten min then rinse. Then I use doggy shampoo that smells nice afterwards. I used this last year for the first time and it worked great better then tomato juice, or any tomato product ever did!!
try taking a tomato bath first. bathe him in it for an hour or something. then use your regualr doggy shampoo and then wash and dry.
This works great.Weird way but works and is cheap.:Ladies douche.Apply to coat keep out of eyes and just leave it on. works like a charm.
i heard the best way to get a skunk smell out is motor oil,i however have never done it.but i do know thats how they used to do it.to be sure call a vet
