How to git rid of skunk smell from a dog?

skunk spray in dog's mouth?how do i get rid of it?How to git rid of skunk smell from a dog?
For many years, I had a white German Shepherd dog who hated skunks and was determined to get back at them.... someday... for all of the times that he was sprayed.

I tried the tomato bath route... it wasn't terribly effective and all it did was turn him pink.

Then we started taking him to the vet for ';skunk baths.'; The vet did an okay job, but not great, and I think that taking him to the vet just got him more incensed that he was going to get that doggone skunk!

Next, we took him to a professional dog groomer and he came back looking and smelling great! No skunk odor... until his next encounter!

Finally, after a nasty divorce between the couple who owned the grooming place, their courtroom battle cost so much, that they no longer had the finances to keep the grooming business.

I went in to talk to them, desperate to find another place or way to be able to keep a nice smelling dog after he was ';skunked.';

Since the groomers were permanently leaving the business, he told me not to bother to pay to go to another professional, and... honestly told me their professional secret... the product that they used to cleanse the dogs after their skunk attacks.

He wasn't kidding and it has since been confirmed by other dog groomers and handlers. What was their secret product? Honestly... Messengil, a feminine product available in any large drug store. It comes in several varieties of scents but any flowery scent seems to do the trick.

One word of caution... after one embarassing trip to the drug store... After a long hike with our second white German Shepherd who didn't hate skunks but liked to go up and poke them in the butt with her nose, and therefore got sprayed, we needed to get the product to de-skunk her.

We stopped at the pharmacy and I stayed outside with her while my husband went inside to buy it. He came back out with his face the brightest scarlet that I have ever seen.

After getting past the muttering and a couple of under the breath curses, he finally told me what had transpired.

After he entered the drug store, he was unsure where to find the product, so he went over to a clerk at the counter. When he asked where the Messengil was located in the store, the clerk looked at him funny.

He immediately saw a need to explain that he wasn't buying it for himself.

';Oh, it's not for me. It's for my dog!';

Needless to say, I purchased the products in the future! How to git rid of skunk smell from a dog?
wash dog in tomato bath
Here is the secret recipe that WORKS. Mix the following:

1 quart 3 percent hydrogen peroxide

1/4 cup baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)

1 teaspoon liquid soap or dish detergent

Mix these together and bathe (';shampoo'; in or rub down) the spray victim thoroughly.

Be sure to use this mixture immediately after it is created, as it is unstable.

Rinse with tap water afterward, and repeat if necessary.

For spray in the eyes, flush with water as soon as possible.

If you can't go to all of the trouble of buying hydrogen peroxide at your local drug store, then a 2% vinegar solution will help a bit. But please, don't bother with the old tomato juice tactic unless you want to smell like skunk + tomato.
fill up a tub w/ tomato sauce outside and put him in.
I really don't envy you. I am not sure if anything much will get rid of it, but if it is too much to cope with, you could give the dog a trim, getting rid of most of the surface hair and bath it in really strong shampoo. Ask the vet, maybe there is some kind of mouth spray to combat it..... Good luck!!
Tomato juice bath and the shampoo.
try feeding him or her a peppermint. That may work ?????
Get you pup in a bath of tomatoe juice!

Works great...
Feed the dog tomatoes. I don't think he'll eat them, add some pasta. The acidity should take care of the smell.
give him a bath in tomato juice
I would do what Frustrated C would do ,it was a good story , still LOL
Take the dog to a vet or dog grooming place but it will cost you some money.Sorry I don't have any other ideas.Good Luck!!!
I doubt the skunk ONLY hit his mouth. I would wash the dog in TOMATO JUICE. (you saturate him in it, and let it soak in for about 15 minutes. If on the face, use a toothbrush to apply to to the face, avoiding the eyes. If the eyes are affected, use a saline solution that you might even use on your self if you had an eye problem. They make a pet breath spray that I would definitely try if a problem in the mouth.

Good Luck
Our vet has a product that flat out works. Not a home remedy. It has to do with breaking down the chemicals and oils but I don't remember what it's called. Its a little bottle of spray or shampoo with purple writing and a picture of a skunk also in purple I think and it smeels pretty good. I had to make an emergency run to a groomer friend who got a skunked dog. Hope you can find it
